Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)
Our practice also offers sperm procurement to be used with Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). Men who do not have sperm present on initial semen analysis can often be helped by one or more of the techniques we employ. We work hand in hand with your partner’s Reproductive Endocrinologist using our advanced microsurgical techniques (when needed) to furnish your sperm to fertilize your partner’s eggs.
Our goal is to accomplish this process with as little invasive technology as possible. Sometimes medication can be used to stimulate sperm production. In other situations a blockage may be identified that can be bypassed using microsurgery. In some extreme cases, we can even extract sperm directly from the testis.
The process starts with an evaluation to identify what the problem is and where it is located. This evaluation includes a detailed history and a specific examination of the genital area. Blood tests are usually required to check your hormonal production and these are best drawn first thing in the morning. In some circumstances, chromosomal studies are needed to see if any sperm are being produced. Our policy is to first review all of your prior lab tests to determine if any others need to be ordered to identify your problem.
When all the information is available, we will outline the course of action that we recommend. At that time we will attempt to answer all your questions and to present you with a reasonable estimate of the chances for success in procuring sperm and achieving a pregnancy. We will also review an appropriate time line for any therapies to take effect. This approach has led to many successes in treating couples with difficult infertility problems.
